- STEMS: Usually shrubby or small trees but can reach STEM:
heights of 30m, and diameters of 2m. Bark dark red-brown, deeply
furrowed, soft and brittle with short, corky, layered fracture,
with many oil cells, aromatic, agreeable taste. Young twigs are
green, Heat wood is dark or orange-brown, resistant to decay
- LEAVES: Bright green above, downy beneath, are 4-6in. long,
oval, specially on older branches often mitten shaped, or three-
lobed on younger shoots or twigs. turn various shades of yellow,
orange, pink and deep red.
- FLOWERS: small greenish appear in April or early May before
the leaves.
